The mission of the Network for Young Artists is to build self-esteem in youth and promote art and culture through voice, dance and music instrument and performing arts programs.
Network for Young Artists, Inc. (NYA) was founded by educator Terry Lowry, in 1999, to give local youth the opportunity to use music and performing arts to build self-esteem, confidence and leadership skills that are transferable to social and academic settings. Although he is not a music teacher, Lowry has a lifelong appreciation for music of all types and a keen awareness of the positive impact music education has on all aspects of learning. Unfortunately, as an educator and coach in one of San Antonio's poorest school districts, Lowry is also keenly aware that the families of the low-income, predominantly minority students he teaches frequently do not have the financial resources to provide music lessons for their children. Although a number of NYA's present and former students have become very talented musicians, the organization's focus is on preparing students for success in all areas of their lives, as opposed to preparing them for professional careers in music, dance, or performing arts.
Located just south of downtown San Antonio. NYA is now in its eighth years of of service to the community and has grown form 30 members its first year to over 175 members. Membership, open to youth 4-20 years of age, includes music lessons, dance lessons, and participation in a host of performance opportunities through out the year. Most parents initially For a $50 annual enrollment fee, NYA members can enroll in any number of weekly classes.
In addition to the personal benefits students derive from performing, many organizations, churches , and community events benefit from the 100-120 public and private performances NYA students give annually for approximately 1,000,00 people.
